MAYOR BLOOMBERG AND TEAMSTERS LOCAL 237 ANNOUNCES TENTATIVE LABOR AGREEMENT

Agreement for Over 9,000 City Workers Sets Pattern for Civilians; Provides Annual 4% Increases in Compensation

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Gregory Floyd, President of Local 237, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, today announced that a tentative contract settlement has been reached with Local 237 on a collective bargaining agreement covering the period from September 13, 2008 through September 25, 2010.  The proposed contract is similar to the collective bargaining settlement reached with the Sergeants Benevolent Association last summer. The agreement, which is subject to ratification, covers over 9,000 employees in mayoral agencies and the Health and Hospitals Corporation.

"This contract agreement establishes the basic parameters for collective bargaining settlements in this round of bargaining," said Mayor Bloomberg. "Today's agreement allows the City to fairly compensate the members of Local 237, who provide vital City services. It also will go another step forward in providing budget predictability and stability in municipal labor relations. We're going to keep investing in preserving the City's essential services.  This contract helps achieve that purpose. I am pleased that we have reached this agreement with President Floyd and I thank him for his efforts."

"We have delivered the best possible contract we could for our members," said President Floyd.  "This agreement provides fair wage increases, which our members need."

The principal features of the settlement are:

  • 4%, compounded, effective October 10, 2008 (effective October 12, 2008 for former members of Local 832, IBT.)
  • 4%, compounded, effective October 10, 2009 (effective October 12, 2009 for former members of Local 832, IBT.)

Welfare Funds

Effective April 10, 2009, the City will contribute $200 per retiree one-time lump sum payment to the Retiree Health and Welfare Funds. This payment is funded internally by the union.

Additional Compensation Fund

Effective September 13, 2010, an additional .25 percent of additional compensation is available, in rate, to purchase recurring benefits, mutually agreed to by the parties, other than to enhance the general wage increases. The initial .10 percent was funded by the City. The remaining .15 percent was funded internally by the union.

Labor Management Committee

A committee will be established within the Police Department to discuss various issues related to School Safety Agents.

The Mayor thanked Deputy Mayor for Operations Edward Skyler, Local 237 President Gregory Floyd and his Committee, Labor Commissioner James F. Hanley and First Deputy Commissioner Margaret M. Connor and their team, and Budget Director Mark Page and his staff for their efforts in reaching this agreement.
