STATEMENTS FROM MAYOR BLOOMBERG AND SPEAKER QUINN ON COUNCIL PASSAGE OF GREEN CART BILL

"Today's bill will make it easier for all New Yorkers who want to eat a healthier diet to purchase affordable and high-quality fresh fruit and vegetables conveniently in their own neighborhoods. By passing this Green Cart legislation today, we will be making New York a healthier city. I want to thank Speaker Quinn, the Council, Deputy Mayor Linda Gibbs, and the Food Policy Taskforce that we created for crafting and passing this bill," said Mayor Bloomberg.

"The communities in our city where obesity and diabetes continue to skyrocket are the same communities that lack even the most basic access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Our bill targets neighborhoods where existing businesses have been unable to fully bridge the health gap and sell fruits and vegetables. The Council is proud to have passed this important legislation, making fresh produce more available and helping to save lives," said Speaker Quinn.
