STATEMENT BY MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON STATE SENATE PASSAGE OF GANSEVOORT BILL

"Once again the State Senate has shown leadership by passing a bill that would allow the City to move forward on its historic Solid Waste Management Plan. The bill overwhelmingly passed today authorizes the City to build a Marine Transfer Station on Manhattan's Gansevoort Peninsula, the City Council adopted a resolution in support of the same project just last week. Once that facility is operational, Sanitation trucks will deliver Manhattan's recyclable metal, glass, and plastic there. That one step would decrease truck traffic to the Bronx and New Jersey, reduce congestion on our bridges and in our tunnels, and save about 30,000 miles of truck trips every year. Already under the Solid Waste Management Plan, waste and recyclables from the Bronx and Staten Island are shipped out by rail, instead of on trucks that worsen traffic and contribute to air pollution. I would like to thank Senator Bruno for his leadership on this issue and I hope that the Assembly follows the lead of the Senate and the City Council, so that we can get closer to ensuring that each borough has the capacity to handle its own waste and recyclables."
