MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION REQUIRING TIMELY PRUNING OF TREES OR VEGATATION THAT COVER TRAFFIC SIGNALS OR SIGNS

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

"The next bill before me is Introductory Number 674-A, sponsored by Council Members Lappin, Comrie, de Blasio, Dickens, Felder, Fidler, Foster, Gentile, Gerson, Gonzalez, Jackson, James, Koppell, Mark-Viverito, Mendez, Nelson, Palma, Recchia, Seabrook, Sears, Stewart, Vacca, Weprin, Katz, Liu, Arroyo, Addabbo, Garodnick, Gennaro, Eugene, White, Ignizo and Gallagher.

"Introductory Number 674-A requires the Department of Parks and Recreation to inspect any location within four days of receiving notice that a traffic control signal or sign is not visible or legible to a motorist due to an obstruction by a tree or other vegetation.  This legislation further requires that the Department prune any tree or vegetation that obstructs a traffic signal or sign in a timely manner and maintain a log of notices and the corrective action taken in each case.    The Parks Department will implement this legislation just as it fulfills its other obligations with respect to trees as set forth in the Administrative Code.

"Our Administration is committed to continue improving safety on our streets and roadways and the timely removal of obstructions to traffic control signals and signs will help New Yorker's navigate our streets more safely and easily.

"I would like to thank Department of Parks and Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe and his staff for their work on this bill.  I would also like to thank the Council for approving this bill."
