STATEMENT BY MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON BROWNFIELD OPPORTUNITY AREA MOU

"I want to congratulate the Governor, Speaker and Senate Majority Leader and thank them on behalf of all New Yorkers for entering into an MOU that will release funds for Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) grants, fulfilling our PlaNYC initiative of encouraging the State to release community-based redevelopment grants. By signing this MOU, the state will be providing $2.7 million in BOA funds for ten projects in New York City. These grants will allow community based organizations to begin taking steps towards remediation of brownfields in neighborhoods where they are concentrated. I also want to thank New Partners for Community Revitalization for their continued advocacy and for the attention they brought to the BOA program. Remediation of brownfields will help provide the land we need to create new affordable housing, spur economic development and job creation, and increase usable open space - all of which is necessary if we're going to meet the challenges of adding nearly 1 million people to our City between now and 2030."
