MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION REQUIRING CITY AGENCIES TO NOTIFY DOHMH OF PESTICIDE USE

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

"The final bill before me is Introductory Number 612-A, sponsored by Council Members Gennaro, Brewer, Fidler, Gentile, Gerson, James, Koppell, Liu, Mark-Viverito, McMahon, Mealy, Monserrate, Nelson, Recchia, Stewart, Gonzalez, Sanders, Sears and the Public Advocate, Betsy Gotbaum.

"Introductory Number 612-A requires City agencies to report all pesticide use to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) in a form and manner as determined by the Health Commissioner.  DOHMH will use this information to create an annual report that will allow us to track and monitor agency pesticide use.  This comprehensive account of City pesticide use will be submitted to the Council on a yearly basis beginning in May 2008.  Comprehensive pesticide reporting will result in a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for all of New Yorkers.

"I would like to thank DOHMH Commissioner Tom Frieden and his staff for their work on this legislation.  I would also like to thank the Council for approving this bill."
