STATEMENT FROM MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM

“In 1998, City voters passed a referendum in support of pay-to-play reforms, and our Administration has long pushed for them to be implemented,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “We have worked closely with Speaker Quinn and the City Council on legislation that fulfills the voters’ mandate, and today, I congratulate them for passing the most comprehensive pay-to-play reforms in the country. This bill will improve the transparency of government by allowing all New Yorkers to see which campaign contributions come from people who do business with the City, and it will strengthen the integrity of government by restricting those contributions – and prohibiting candidates from receiving public matching funds for them. All reforms must be viewed as a work in progress, but this bill is a major improvement of the existing system that will strengthen our efforts to create a more transparent government that is less susceptible to corruption and improper influence.”
