MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION INCREASING SALARIES FOR ELECTED OFFICIALS

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Law

“The first bill before me today is Introductory Number 458, sponsored by Speaker Quinn and Council Members Rivera, Comrie, de Blasio, Fidler, Dickens, Felder and Oddo.  Introductory Number 458 increases the salaries of the Offices of Mayor, Public Advocate, Comptroller, Borough President, City Council Member and District Attorney.

“These increases were recommended by the Advisory Commission to Review the Compensation Levels of Elected Officials, which I appointed in April of 2006 to examine compensation levels and make recommendations.  I accepted the report on October 23, 2006 and thereafter forwarded the recommendations to the City Council for consideration.  These salary adjustments represent the first increases for these Offices since 1999.

“I would like to thank the members of the Commission, Chair Tom Bernstein, G.G. Michelson, and Stephanie Palmer for their comprehensive examination of the issue, and I hope that the City Council will give full consideration to the Commission’s recommendations for reform.”
