MAYOR BLOOMBERG HONORS BRAVERY OF NEW YORK VETERANS AND SERVICE MEMBERS

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today paid tribute to New York City veterans and service members by hosting a breakfast at Gracie Mansion and marching in this year's Veterans' Day Parade.  The theme of the 2006 Veterans Day Parade is "Still Serving Proudly," in honor of the New York City uniformed personnel and public servants who have served in the United States military.  The Mayor was joined by New York City veterans and service members including Vice Admiral Vivien S. Crea, Assistant Commandant of the US Coast Guard, Chaplain Lieutenant Michael Hall, Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs Executive Director Clarice Joynes, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and Homeless Services Commissioner Robert Hess.

"The Veterans Day Parade is our way of expressing gratitude to all of the women and men who have served - and who continue to serve - in our nation's Armed Forces," said Mayor Bloomberg.  "As we honor the memories of all those who gave their lives to protect our freedoms at home, we will keep working to make New York City a place they would be proud of."

"Today, I join Mayor Bloomberg in honoring veterans from New York City and around the nation," said Executive Director Joynes.  "On this day, we pay special tribute to all those who proudly defend our country.  The men and women in the armed forces embody the very best qualities of public service."

The pre-parade Veterans Day Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Eternal Light Monument in Madison Square Park commemorated the historic signing of the Armistice on November 11, 1918, which officially ended to World War I.  Corporal Elizabeth Quinones, of the 6th Communication Battalion, US Marine Corps, performed the National Anthem. Wreaths were placed at the base of the monument, followed by a 21-Gun salute and the playing of Taps, honoring veterans who gave their lives in support of the nation.  Musical performances were given by US Army veteran Alton Miller and the USO Troupe of Metropolitan New York as well as country music recording artist Rebecca Lindsey.

Currently, there are approximately 400,000 veterans and 8,000 reservists, active duty and National Guard members living throughout the five boroughs. Since September 11, 2001, 8 New York City residents have given their lives in Operation Enduring Freedom and 47 have given their lives in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
