MAYOR BLOOMBERG RESCHEDULES TRIP TO IRELAND

Emerald Isle Visit - Postponed Last Month Because of Looming Citywide Heat Emergency - Will Occur on Tuesday, August 22

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced he will travel to Sligo and Ballymote, Ireland on Tuesday, August 22.  This trip was originally scheduled for July 28, but was postponed because of the then-looming Heat Emergency in New York City.

"I am very grateful to all the civic and political leaders in Ireland who have been so understanding of our situation - and so gracious in rescheduling the visit," said Mayor Bloomberg.  "I look forward to meeting with them and helping to unveil the monument to the Fighting 69th, New York's legendary Irish Brigade.  No other city in the world owes so much to Ireland, and no other nation has so benefited from the bravery and valor of Irish soldiers.  A monument on Irish soil honoring all those who have served in the Fighting 69th will be a fitting tribute to its members and the roots they have in that very soil."

Preliminary plans for the rescheduled trip include a breakfast reception at the Sligo City Hall at 8:00 AM and an 11:00AM speech at the dedication ceremony in Ballymote for Ireland's National Monument to the Fighting 69th Infantry Regiment, New York National Guard.  The Mayor will also join the people of Ballymote at a reception following the unveiling of the monument.

The Office of the Mayor will provide surface transportation from Sligo to Ballymote and back.  Please contact the Mayor's Press Office at pressoffice@cityhall.nyc.gov to secure a seat in the bus.

While the Mayor visited Ireland many times prior to entering public service, this trip will be his first since being elected Mayor in November 2001.
