MAYOR BLOOMBERG AND POLICE COMMISSIONER KELLY SWEAR IN NEW CLASS OF 1,511 NYPD RECRUITS

Recruits are Members of the Second Class to Be Sworn in This Year

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly today swore in a new class of 1,511 New York Police Department (NYPD ) recruits.  Today's class is made up of 919 recruits who have received four-year college degrees, completed associates degrees or earned Master's degrees. The swearing-in ceremony took place at Brooklyn College.

"Today, 1,511 recruits join the ranks of New York's Finest," said Mayor Bloomberg.  "You join a police department that has distinguished itself as being the national leader in reducing crime. I'm confident that today's class will continue to serve this City well and will use the training from the Police Academy to continue to make America's safest big city even safer."

"These men and women join the Police Department at the most important time in our history," said Commissioner Kelly. "In addition to fighting crime to the lowest levels in recent memory, the members of the Department have taken up nothing less than the national responsibility of protecting the financial and communications center of the world from another terrorist attack."

This class of recruits is the second class to be sworn in this year. The Police Department hires two classes each year to help keep the headcount and patrol strength level throughout the year. This has been standard practice for the NYPD since 2004.  The recruits will spend nearly seven months training at the Police Academy. Upon graduation, new officers will be assigned to various commands throughout the City, including the Patrol Services Bureau, Housing Bureau, and Transit Division.  The following is a breakdown of gender and ethnicity of the 1,511 recruits being sworn in:

Male: 80%
Female: 20%
White: 46%
Hispanic: 28%
Black: 17%
Asian: 8%
Other: 1%
