MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION EXTENDING DEADLINE FOR AWARDING STREET FURNITURE FRANCHISE

Remarks by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

“The next bill before me is Introductory Number 750-A, sponsored at the Administration’s request by Council Members Katz, Gerson and Stewart.  This legislation authorizes the Department of Transportation, with the approval of the Franchise and Concession Review Committee, to extend the expiration date of the franchise to operate and maintain bus shelters to a date no later than December 31, 2006.

“The Department of Transportation is in the process of granting a franchise to operate and display advertising on all of the City’s street furniture.  The Department of Transportation believes that a franchise will be awarded in 2006.

“In order to ensure a smooth transition from the existing bus stop shelter franchise to a new street furniture franchise, with no interruption in service or revenue to the City, it is necessary to extend the existing franchise until the contract for the new franchise is in place.

“I would like to thank the Department of Transportation and City Council for their work on this legislation.”
