MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION TO CONTINUE DISTRIBUTION OF HEALTH INSURANCE BROCHURES

Remarks by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

"The next bill before me is Introductory number 700, sponsored by Council Members Moskowitz, Quinn, Katz, Rivera, Comrie, Brewer, Sears, Reyna, Weprin, Liu, Seabrook, Speaker Miller, and Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum.  This bill removes the sunset clause from Local Law 1 of 2002.

"Local Law 1 of 2002 required the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene  to create and distribute pamphlets outlining public health insurance programs available to New York City residents.  The law further required City agencies to distribute these brochures.  Pursuant to a sunset clause, the provision requiring agencies other than the Health Department to distribute the pamphlet expired on October 1, 2005.

"Intro. 700 removes that sunset clause, ensuring the continued distribution of what has proven to be an effective tool for disseminating public health information.

"I want to thank the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Mayor's Office for Health Insurance Access  and the City Council for their work on this bill."
