Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today hosted the first ever reception in honor of South American Independence and Culture at Gracie Mansion.  The event honored the history, culture and independence movements of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela.  New York is home to hundreds of thousands of South Americans who have made tremendous contributions to New York's economy, culture and communities. Joining Mayor Bloomberg at the event were Deputy Mayor Carol Robles-Roman, Immigrant Affairs Commissioner Guillermo Linares, Office to Combat Domestic Violence Commissioner Yolanda Jimenez, Department of Juvenile Commissioner Justice Neil Hernandez fashion designer Carolina Herrera, MetroStar Sergio Galván Rey and numerous distinguished guests, including consul generals and ambassadors representing their respective countries.  

"Many New Yorkers trace their heritage to South America and tonight we honor those countries and their sons and daughters who help make our City so great," said Mayor Bloomberg. "The liberation movements in South America in the 1880s serve as models for the struggle for freedom across the globe and closer to home our City is buoyed by the energy and drive of South Americans."

"I feel honored for this invitation and think this recognition of our countries shows that we are an important factor in this City," said MetroStars Sergio Galván Rey. "Today, all those countries are showcased through sports, and this celebration shows that City Hall has done a great job of making this city 'home to all South Americans.'"

Sponsor for the event included Dial-A-Mattress, Manhattan Beer Distributors, Inbev, Galos Corporation, Argentine Pavillion, Churrascaria Plataforma, Pomaire Restaurant, Tierras Colombiana, Alex Aguinada Restaurant, Tripee's Restaurant, and Pio Pio Restaurant.  Inca, a traditional Andes music group, entertained guest as they arrived while the music of Manny Soba played during the evening's program.
