MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG AND NYC & COMPANY PRESIDENT CRISTYNE L. NICHOLAS JOIN DELEGATES AND GUESTS TO SHOP AT MACY'S HERALD SQUARE

Spotlights Fashion and Retail Events of "Experience NYC" Delegate Program

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and NYC & Company President and Chief Executive Officer Cristyne L. Nicholas today welcomed delegates and guests for "Experience NYC" at Macy's Herald Square.   Today's shopping outing highlights the Fashion and Retail Day of "Experience NYC," a four-day program (August 30 - September 2) produced by the City's convention organizers to give visitors to the 2004 Republican National Convention the opportunity to experience activities and events that only New York City has to offer.  Starting tomorrow through Monday, September 6th, delegates and guests will also be able to enjoy "Summer Sales Tax Free Week".  Purchases of clothing and footwear costing less than $110 are exempt from New York's 8.625% sales tax during this period.

"New York is proud to welcome the delegates and guests of the 2004 Republican National Convention to Macy's for a true New York experience," said Mayor Bloomberg.   "Throughout this week, we are encouraging visitors to take in some of the City's greatest attractions and restaurants, and to take advantage of Summer Sales Tax Free Week and shop in our stores.  We expect the Convention to produce $265 million in economic activity in New York City.  From creating thousands of jobs in the construction, trade and hospitality industries, to showing the world that New York City is the perfect place to work, live and raise a family; the 2004 Republican National Convention has been great for New York City."

"Each year, millions of people come to New York to experience the World Capital of Fashion and Shopping," said Cristyne L. Nicholas.  "Shopping is an important economic engine for New York, and visitors spend more than $3 billion in city stores each year.  In addition to the special events surrounding Fashion and Retail Day, convention delegates and guests are also enjoying New York City's extraordinary retail stores through Come Early, Stay Late, a visitor experience and savings program that provides special discounts at more than 100 retailers throughout the City."

"Experience NYC is just one of the many ways the Host Committee has worked to ensure that delegates and guests of the 2004 Republican National Convention are a part of New York's vibrant life," said NYC Host Committee Chief Operating Officer Maureen Reidy.  "The Host Committee has designed a package of experiences to meet the taste of the most discerning delegates and guests so that they might shop in our stores, dine in our restaurants, go to our theatres and provide the City with an infusion of cash at what is usually a slow time."
