MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION CREATING ADOPT-A-PARK PROGRAM

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Law

“The next bill before me is Introductory Number 399-A, sponsored by Council Member Addabbo, Jr., Speaker Miller and Council Members Gerson, Jackson, Katz, Yassky, Gennaro, Avella, Baez, Barron, Brewer, Clarke, Comrie, Dilan, Fidler, Gentile, Jennings, Koppell, Liu, Monserrate, Nelson, Quinn, Recchia, Jr., Reed, Reyna, Sanders, Jr., Seabrook, Sears, Serrano, Stewart, Weprin, Foster, Provenzano, Vann, Boyland, Gioia, Rivera, Moskowitz, Espada, Jr., Martinez, Lopez, Felder, Gonzalez, Perkins, Oddo, Lanza, Vallone, McMahon, DeBlasio, Gallagher and the Public Advocate Ms. Gotbaum. This bill amends the Administrative Code of the City of New York to create an Adopt-A-Park program.

“This legislation will provide a mechanism for individuals, community groups and businesses to offer direct financial assistance to a City park, playground, pool or recreational facility of their choosing.

“This legislation is in line with my Administration’s commitment to link every park with a business, foundation or individual that can offer direct financial support to our parks.  It complements the successful and substantial on-going efforts of the Administration to develop new volunteer and philanthropic partnerships that increase private support for public space.  The revenue generated from park adoptions under this bill will be used to supplement the budget of the Department of Parks and Recreation for the maintenance and programming of its extensive properties.

“I want to commend the Council for its interest in helping the Parks Department to identify alternative sources of funding and I welcome their assistance in building other new public-private partnerships.  I want to especially thank Council Member Addabbo for his work on this legislation.”
