MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG AND POLICE COMMISSIONER RAYMOND W. KELLY HONOR POLICE OFFICER RICHARD BURT

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly today honored Police Officer Richard Burt by promoting him to Detective and presenting him with an NYPD Gold Shield for his heroic actions during yesterday’s tragic killing of Councilman James E. Davis.  The promotion ceremony was held in the Blue Room at City Hall.

“Officer Richard Burt is truly one of New York’s Finest,” said Mayor Bloomberg.  “By putting himself in harms way during the chaotic and tragic events yesterday, Officer Burt ended a terrible situation and saved countless lives.  All of us who were in City Hall and the entire City owe him their gratitude.  We are lucky to have him as a part of the New York Police Department, and it is my privilege to show our appreciation by promoting Officer Burt to Detective and presenting him with a Gold Shield.”

Richard Burt, a 34-year-old Queens resident, was appointed to the New York City Police Department on February 28, 1994.  He is currently a uniformed member of the Police Department’s Intelligence Division and is assigned to City Hall.  Yesterday, he was temporarily assigned to vacation relief for City Council Speaker Gifford Miller’s security detail.
