MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG’S STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF MICHAEL J. HANDY

“We are deeply saddened by the death of Michael J. Handy, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Veteran’s Affairs who died from a heart attack yesterday afternoon.  He was a man dedicated to public service.  Michael fought for our country in the Vietnam War and served our great City for more than 20 years.  He led this important office where he played an active role advising three Mayors, including myself, on veteran’s and military issues.  As our country has been at war since 9/11, Michael was particularly invaluable in supporting our troops at home and abroad as well as making sure that those men and women whom we lost from New York were remembered.  Michael is survived by his wife Edna, and their four daughters to whom I would like to express my deepest condolences on behalf of a grateful City.”
