MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG’S STATEMENT ON CITY COUNCIL’S SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION BILL

“Last year, our administration began to fundamentally reform the City’s school construction program to increase accountability and efficiency, reduce costs and bureaucratic practices, and place its focus on the construction and renovation of classroom space for our children.  This bill would reverse this progress by creating a new, unnecessary, and burdensome requirement that extends far beyond state law and fails to produce a single new classroom seat.  It adds another layer of bureaucracy specifically dedicated to the preparation of school construction reports at a cost of about $500,000 per year – an amount equal to the combined starting salaries of twelve teachers.

“Since so much of this information is already available to the City Council and is not even read or used according to knowledgeable City Council sources, it is hard to imagine why, during a fiscal crisis, we need to use scarce resources to pay for more bureaucracy when we need every dollar to go to the classrooms.”
