MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG CUTS RIBBON AT NEW CRATE AND BARREL STORE IN NEW YORK CITY’S HISTORIC CABLE BUILDING IN SOHO

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today was joined by Crate and Barrel founder and CEO Gordon Segal and President Barbara Turf to cut the ribbon to officially open New York City’s newest Crate and Barrel store located in the historic, 1894 Stanford White-designed Cable Building at the corner of Houston and Broadway in SoHo.  The state-of-the-art, 41,300 square foot home furnishings store is Crate and Barrel’s second location in Manhattan, and features two floors of housewares, Holiday décor, merchandise for entertaining, and “convertible,” space-saving furniture specifically designed to meet the needs of New Yorkers.

“Crate and Barrel’s decision to renovate this historic space and open a new store in New York City’s SoHo district is great news for shoppers and even better news for New York City,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “Crate and Barrel’s presence will create 200 new jobs and serve as a major economic magnet for the area. Crate and Barrel’s commitment clearly demonstrates the retail community’s belief that New York City is the place for future growth and prosperity. This new store is a tremendous asset to downtown Manhattan and I hope it will encourage others to invest in the future of the area.”

“When we opened our first Manhattan store at 59th Street and Madison in 1995, New Yorkers immediately responded to the Crate and Barrel concept and merchandise,” said Mr. Segal. “Through our new store, we hope to cater to this neighborhood’s diverse population of students, artists and professionals, while doing our share to help revitalize the downtown area.”

Crate and Barrel selected the Cable Building for its unique architectural interest – an important component for Crate and Barrel store designs nationwide. The Cable Building – which served as a hub for the cables which moved New York City’s famous cable cars along lower Broadway – features arched floor to ceiling windows and an entrance centered on Broadway, true to the Cable Building’s original design.

Since opening the first Crate and Barrel store in an old Chicago elevator factory in 1962, the company has grown to 112 stores in 23 markets across the country.  For more information, visit the Crate and Barrel website at www.crateandbarrel.com.
