MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ANNOUNCES TENTATIVE LABOR AGREEMENT WITH THE UNIFORMED FIREFIGHTERS ASSOCIATION

New Contract for 9,000 Uniformed Members of FDNY

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced a tentative settlement for a new contract for the approximately 9,000 uniformed employees of the FDNY. The settlement, referred to as the “2000-2002 Uniformed Firefighters Association Economic Agreement,” is a two-year contract patterned after the economic terms reached with the other uniformed City employees and subject to ratification.  Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta, Labor Relations Commissioner James F. Hanley, and United Firefighters Association (UFA) President Stephen J. Cassidy joined the Mayor for the announcement.

“New York City’s firefighters provide a vitally important service, often risking their lives to protect the rest of us,” Mayor Bloomberg said.  “The agreement reached today will allow the City to adequately compensate firefighters for their tremendous efforts and courage.  And I am confident and grateful that the members of New York’s Bravest will continue to serve their fellow New Yorkers with the skill and valor for which they are known.”

“We are pleased that an agreement has been reached between the city and the Uniformed Firefighters Association,” Fire Commissioner Scoppetta said. We are hopeful that the membership will ratify this contract.”

The principal features of the Agreement include:

A 5% increase on the first day of the contract, and another 5% increase, compounded, on the first day of the 13th month of the contract;

A special fund of 1.5% on the last day of the contract set aside to address certain unique, specific issues for the Union.  This funding will be used to increase the night shift differential for employees with less than five years of service, as well as to add portions of the money onto steps of the pay plan for newly hired employees and an increase in the annuity fund contribution for all employees.

“This Economic Agreement provides wage increases and other benefits for the members of the Uniformed Firefighters Association,” Mayor Bloomberg said.  “In arriving at this settlement, the City applied the basic terms of the economic agreement reached with the other members of the Uniformed Forces Coalition and coupled the City’s commitment to attain fiscally prudent settlements with the Unions’ aim to achieve fair treatment and compensation for their members.    I would finally like to thank Deputy Mayor Marc Shaw, Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta, Labor Commissioner James Hanley, OMB Director Mark Page, the Uniformed Firefighters Association Executive Board, and their staffs for all of their efforts in reaching this Agreement.”
