MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG AND POLICE COMMISSIONER RAYMOND W. KELLY DEDICATE MEMORIAL PLAQUE TO FALLEN OFFICER GLEN PETTIT

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly today dedicated a memorial plaque to Police Officer Glen Pettit, who was among the 23 New York Police Department officers who died during the attacks on the World Trade Center. The Mayor and Commissioner presided over the ceremony at the Police Academy in Manhattan.

“Officer Pettit provided an invaluable service to the NYPD and his fellow New Yorkers in recording the activities of New York’s Finest at crime scenes and emergencies,” Mayor Bloomberg said. “He performed his duties with tremendous skill and dedication and his efforts greatly enhanced the Police Department’s ability to keep New Yorkers safe.  We are forever grateful to Officer Pettit for his courageous acts on September 11th and for his outstanding service throughout his career.”

“Glen Pettit was an extraordinary Police Officer whose dedication and enthusiasm brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Department,” Commissioner Kelly said. “The plaque that is being dedicated at the Police Academy will stand as a reminder to every new recruit class, that Glen Pettit was a man who ran towards trouble to help, as others ran from it to escape.”

Upon learning of the attacks, Officer Pettit joined the front line of the rescue effort and helped hundreds of people escape the World Trade Center.  His remains were later identified during the recovery effort.  Officer Pettit joined the Department in 1997, and served in the 10th Precinct before joining the Video Unit at the Police Academy in 2000.  Officer Pettit, who had been a volunteer firefighter at age 16, was also an avid photographer and videographer.  He freelanced for many media outlets, including The New York Times, New York Newsday, and News Channel 12 in Long Island. Officer Glen Pettit was 30 years old.
