MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG SIGNS BILL AMENDING NEW YORK CITY DOMESTIC
PARTNERSHIP LAW
Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg
at a Public Hearing on Local Laws
"The last bill before me today is Introductory Number 114-A,
sponsored by Speaker Miller and Council Members Quinn, Baez, Brewer,
Clarke, DeBlasio, Gerson, Jackson, Martinez, Moskowitz, Perkins, Reed,
Rivera, Serrano, Yassky, and Koppell.
"This bill, which will take effect immediately, amends the New York City Domestic Partnership Law by revising the definition of "domestic partners" to include persons who have lawfully registered domestic partnerships or entered into civil unions or marriages in other jurisdictions that are not explicitly recognized by New York State.
"Under this bill, members of a marriage that are not recognized by the State of New York, members of a domestic partnership, and members of a civil union, lawfully entered into in another jurisdiction, will be entitled to all the rights and benefits currently available to registered New York City domestic partners, such as health benefits and visitation rights at City hospitals. A certificate of such domestic partnership, civil union, or marriage issued by another jurisdiction will constitute sufficient proof of entitlement to such rights and/or benefits."
