MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG KICKS-OFF "BROADWAY COMES DOWNTOWN"

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg welcomed a special preview of the new Broadway musical "AMOUR" that was open to the public in Battery Park today. The musical, directed by James Lapine, is the first Broadway show by Michel Legrand, the Oscar and Grammy-award winning songwriter who appeared onstage in Battery Park to perform. Stars Malcolm Gets and Melissa Errico and the cast of "AMOUR" also sang highlights from the new musical.

"I would like to thank the cast of 'AMOUR' for bringing their talents to Battery Park, one of our City's most beautiful settings in Lower Manhattan," said Mayor Bloomberg. "This public performance is a wonderful opportunity to experience one of New York City's greatest attractions - Broadway - and reminds us of all of the uplifting powers of the arts."

"I hope this concert in Battery Park will be the first in a series of mini-concerts under the banner 'Broadway Goes Downtown.' We are delivering the message that Broadway is alive and well. The theatrical community looks forward to our downtown friends joining us to celebrate the start of a wonderful new season on Broadway," said Gerald Schoenfeld, co-producer of "AMOUR" and Chairman of the Shubert Organization.

"AMOUR" will begin Broadway performances on September 20th at the Music Box Theatre (239 West 45th Street) and the official opening night is October 20th. "AMOUR," was first produced in Paris under the title "Le Passe-Muraille," and won the 1997 Prix Moliere for Best Musical, the French equivalent of the Tony Award. Based on the French short story by Marcel Aymé, "AMOUR" features book and lyrics by Didier van Cauwelaert, with an English adaptation by Jeremy Sams. "AMOUR" is presented on Broadway by The Shubert Organization, Jean Doumanian Productions, Inc. and USA Ostar Theatricals. It will play Tuesday through Saturday evenings and matinees on Wednesdays and Saturdays and Sundays.
