DAVID WELLS, ROGER CLEMENS, WHITEY FORD AND
YOGI BERRA ANNOUNCE $250,000 CONTRIBUTION
TO THE COMMUNITY COUNCIL

9th Year of Support for Bronx-Based Foundation
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, joined by Yankees All-Star Pitchers Roger
Clemens and David Wells and Hall of Famers Whitey Ford and Yogi Berra
as well as Yankees President Randy Levine, Chief Operating Officer
Lonn A. Trost, Vice President for Community Relations Brian Smith
and Community Council Chairman Robert A. Williams, announced a $250,000
grant to the Community Council. Today's announcement marks the 9th
year that the New York Yankees have supported the Community Council
and brings the total donated by the Yankees to over $3 million. The
$250,000 contribution will be used to for youth, recreation, and education
programs throughout the Bronx.
"It's my great pleasure to bring together four of the greatest ballplayers of today and of all time to celebrate two of the great winning institutions in New York City -- The New York Yankees and the Borough of the Bronx," said Mayor Bloomberg. "For almost a decade, the New York Yankees have put their money where their mouth is and supported valuable community, education and recreation programs throughout the Bronx. The Community Council has provided nearly 100 scholarships to Bronx high school students and has been a force for positive change."
"The Yankees are proud to continue their support and financial commitment in helping to build communities in the Bronx and to work with the Mayor, the Bronx Borough President, Councilmembers and all elected officials in trying to use these funds to improve people's quality of life," said Yankees President Levine.
Since 1994, the Community Council has funded over 100 community-based organizations and provided approximately 150 grants to Little Leagues throughout the Borough of the Bronx. The Community Council has recognized 280 outstanding young people, nominated by their Community Boards, for making a difference in the lives of the people of the Bronx. These outstanding youths are given grants by the Community Council each year. Throughout its tenure the Community Council has distributed over 120,000 Yankees tickets to non-profit organizations around the Borough.
