MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG APPOINTS CARMEN RITA TORRENT AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND ANNE SUTHERLAND FUCHS AS CHAIR TO THE COMMISSION ON WOMEN'S ISSUES


Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced the appointment of Carmen Rita Torrent as the Executive Director and Anne Sutherland Fuchs as Chair of the New York City Commission on Women's Issues. The Commission on Women's Issues (previously known as the Commission on the Status of Women) was established by Mayoral Executive Order to advise the Mayor on policies to ensure equality for women in New York City in the fields of employment, housing, education and healthcare.

"Carmen Rita Torrent has the broad professional expertise and life experience to lead the Commission on Women's Issues," Mayor Bloomberg said. "Anne Sutherland Fuchs is uniquely qualified to evaluate and advise the Commission on the important matters pertaining to the Commission so that the women of New York can experience all the opportunities this City has to offer."

The Commission on Women's Issues is comprised of thirty-five members appointed by the Mayor for three-year staggered terms, as well as a Chair and Vice-Chair. The Chairperson for the New York City Human Rights Commission serves as an ex-officio member.

Ms. Torrent served as an Assistant Attorney General in both the Labor and Litigation Bureaus of the New York State Department of Law. She has also served as Special Assistant Corporation Counsel to the Human Resources Administration, Senior Secretary to the Honorable Frank Torres, Justice of the Supreme Court, and as an attorney with the Legal Aid Society's Criminal Division. Ms. Torrent embarked on her legal career, later in life, after raising her family. She received her J.D. from CUNY Law School in 1986 and was a member of the first graduating class of the law school. She received a BA in Business Administration from Baruch College.

Ms. Fuchs is the former CEO of Phillips, de Pury & Luxembourg, the premier Auction house owned by LVMH Moët Hennesey Louis Vuitton. Currently, she is the Executive Vice President of LVMH. Ms. Fuchs also spent 25 years in the publishing business with Hearst, Condé Nast, Hachette, CBS, Charter and the New York Times. She was responsible for some of the best-known magazine brands including Vogue, "O", Oprah Magazine, Harper's Bazaar and Town and Country. She serves on the Board of Directors of Gartner Inc. and was on the Board of Trustees of the Whitney Museum. She has two sons and resides in New York and Connecticut. Ms. Fuchs received a BA in French Literature from New York University.
