NYC DOT Commissioner Sadik-Khan, NYC Bike Share Announce That Citi Bike Exceeds 100,000 Rides in Just 10 Days

Surge in riding fueled by more than 30,000 annual members, 6,000 daily and weekly users so far

New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and New York City Bike Share today announced the Citi Bike, New York’s newest public transportation system, has exceeded 100,000 rides in just the first 10 days of operation, traveling more than 270,000 miles—greater than the distance to the moon. Citi Bike also exceeded 30,000 annual members, signing up 15,000 in just the last 10 days and selling more than 6,000 daily and weekly memberships since they went on sale Sunday.

“Citi Bike is New York’s summer blockbuster, and in just 10 days these signature blue bikes are already everywhere on city streets,” said Commissioner Sadik-Khan. “While impressive, these 100,000 rides are just a fraction of all the bike rides New Yorkers are making to get around, and we expect that Citi Bike will shift into even higher gear this summer as more people sign up.”

Citi Bike launched on May 27 to annual members and June 2 to those purchasing daily and weekly passes with a credit card at station kiosks in the initial service area, including Manhattan below 59th Street and in the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Williamsburg, Clinton Hill, Fort Greene and DUMBO, with bike share stations located every few blocks. Citi Bike is the nation’s largest bike share system and is funded by a $41 million sponsorship from Citi, one of the world’s leading global banks, and without City subsidy. Annual members receive an electronic key to undock a bike from any station, allowing unlimited trips up to 45 minutes for an entire year without incurring any additional costs. Twenty-four-hour and seven-day access passes provide unlimited 30-minute trips.
