Internships Opportunities in Detention

The New York City Department of Juvenile Justice offers opportunities for students in education, crimminal justice, and human service majors to be sponsored in non-salaried intern experiences. Each college or university sponsoring students develops an agreement with DJJ outlining the objectives and time frames required by the students's course. Schools or students interested in developing internships should contact the Director of Programs by telephone at (212) 925-7779 ext. 224 or via e-mail at nycdjj@djj.nyc.gov.

- Paid Positions -

Public Service Corps Interns

  • College students work up to 20 hours per week in clerical positions.
  • College students are paid by Public Service Corps (NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services)
  • Contact:

DCAS College Interns - Summer only

  • Limited number of positions for undergraduate, graduate or professional interns.
  • Students are interviewed to work in specific agency units pending their major and qualifications.
  • Interns work up to 35 hours a week for up to 13 weeks.
  • Students are paid by the Department of Juvenile Justice and receive no benefits or paid holidays.

- Unpaid Positions -

Student Interns

  • Student interns receiving experience or credit for their work in their major area of study.
  • Student interns are not paid and are processed through the Agency's Volunteers for Youth program.
  • Workload is from seven hours a week and up, depending on the student's program and school requirements.
