In 1999, the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) commemorated its 20th year of service. To mark the occasion, the Office of Public Affairs researched the history of Juvenile Detention in New York City. This research culminated in an exhibit unveiled at John Jay College of the City of New York in June 2000. DJJ has recreated this history as outlined below:
