About City Employment

Approximately 85 percent of all positions in New York City government are filled through civil service examinations. The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) continues to accept applications for various open competitive examinations for which the public may apply.

The annual schedule reflects the City's effort to maintain a smaller workforce. The open competitive examinations schedule includes specialized job titles, where the need for such personnel cannot be met within City government's existing work force. Civil service lists established from these examinations will be available to fill future vacancies from one to four years after they are established.
