Hunters
Still Need Vehicle Access Permits At Cannonsville Reservoir
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
issued a clarification today about the requirements for hunting
at the Cannonsville Cooperative Deer Hunting Area, involving
10,200 acres at the Cannonsville Reservoir in the Town of
Tompkins. Hunters who wish to take 4-wheel drive vehicles
into the "Johnny Brook Hunting Area" are still required to
obtain vehicle access permits from DEP Police. However, in
1999, hunters at the Cannonsville Reservoir do not need the
DEP hunting permits which are required at the other sites
the City has opened to deer hunting for the first time this
year.
Vehicle access permits for Johnny Brook are available at DEP's
Beerston Police Barracks, four-and-half miles south of Walton
on Route 10. Sixteen vehicle permits are issued per day by
lottery. Applicants must be present when the the lottery is
conducted at 7:00 each evening for the following day's hunt.
For example, a lottery is held on Friday at 7:00 p.m. for
the hunt on Saturday. For rules, maps and other information
about hunting at Cannonsville, hunters should call the DEP
Police at 607/363-9000.
