New York City Appoints New Watershed Enforcement Coordinator and Director of DEP Police

Commissioner Joel A. Miele Sr., P.E., of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced today that Stephen J. King has been appointed as the Department's new Coordinator of Enforcement and Director of Police Operations in the City's upstate reservoir watershed.

"Steve King brings a wide variety of experience to this very important position," said Commissioner Miele. "He has served with distinction as an attorney for this Department, the Office of the Mayor 's Midtown Enforcement Unit, and other City agencies. In addition to past positions, his educational and military experience give him a strong foundation in enforcement and security matters. I am very pleased to make this appointment."

As Coordinator of Enforcement and Director of DEP Police, Mr. King will supervise all police operations throughout the watershed of the City's upstate reservoirs, where DEP maintains four precincts with a staff of over 50 police officers. He also will coordinate enforcement efforts with those of DEP's inspectors, who patrol the watershed, as well as DEP and Corporation Counsel attorneys.

A graduate of New York Law School and the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Mr. King served as a Security Policeman in the United States Air Force and is in his 16th year as a member of the 105th Airlift Wing of the New York Air National Guard at Stewart Airfield in Newburgh. He is a Licensed Special Patrolman, a New York State Peace Officer Certified Instructor, and a Certified Hazardous Materials Responder.

One of twelve children, Mr. King was born and raised in northern New Jersey. He and his wife, Tina, maintain a home in Delaware County.

The City's upstate reservoirs are located in a 1,969-square-mile watershed in eight counties on both sides of the Hudson River — Delaware, Greene, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster in the Catskill Region, and Dutchess, Putnam and Westchester Counties east of the Hudson. DEP is responsible for operating and protecting the City's water supply system, one of the largest in the world, which serves nearly eight million residents of the City and one million people in Westchester, Putnam, Orange and Ulster Counties.
