The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the
Kensico Environmental Enhancement Program (KEEP) will be honoring the
winners of the Annual Kensico Watershed Water Conservation & Water
Quality Preservation Art & Poetry Contest. The ceremony recognizes
6th and 7th grade students whose artwork and poems exhibit a superior
understanding and appreciation of the water supply system and water conservation
and preservation.
The contest invited 6th and 7th grade students from schools in the towns
that surround the Kensico Reservoir to submit original works of art and
poetry that address themes related to New York City Water System, the
role that the Kensico Reservoir plays in the system, and the importance
of water conservation and water quality preservation both locally and
regionally. Entries are judged on their originality, craftsmanship and
creativity.
In addition to welcoming comments by DEP Commissioner Christopher O.
Ward, the event will include remarks by Angelo Spillo, who is Director
of the Pace University Environmental Center and KEEP’s co-Chairman.
About 150 students, parent, teachers, administrators and invited guests
are expected to attend. Winning entries will be displayed.
The New York City Water System provides 90% of Westchester County's drinking
water, much of it from the Kensico Reservoir. A similar event will be
held in Manhattan on May 7 to honor the 5th and 6th grade winners of the
18th Annual Water Conservation Art and Poetry Contest in New York City.
