To Reopen Roadway Over The Kensico Dam To Passenger Vehicles
Commissioner Joel A. Miele, Sr., P.E., of the New York City Department of
Environmental Protection (DEP) announced today that the agency has reopened
the roadway over the Kensico Dam to passenger vehicles, including sport utility
vehicles and light pickup trucks. Box trucks, dump trucks, step vans, trailers
and other large vehicles will be prohibited. Security checkpoints at either
end of the roadway will be manned by police officers around the clock, seven
days a week. Signs prohibiting trucks are being placed at appropriate locations.
The agency has acted in consultation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,
which is developing and implementing a security program for DEP's Water Supply
infrastructure.
"We closed the roadway in response to the terrorist attacks of September
11th," said Commissioner Miele, "and we regret the inconvenience
that may have caused area residents."
