DEP Appoints New Manager of Environmental Enforcement Units

Commissioner Joel A. Miele Sr., P.E., of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced today the appointment of Mr. Kevin F. Barry as Manager of the Environmental Enforcement Units (EEU) of the DEP Police Department, which operates in the watershed areas of the City's upstate reservoirs. The appointment of Mr. Barry is an important step in DEP's initiative to expand and enhance police operations and environmental law enforcement in the watershed.

"Mr. Barry brings excellent professional credentials to this demanding position," said Commissioner Miele. "His strong analytical and supervisory background in law enforcement provides good experience for the leadership role Mr. Barry will play in directing the operations of the EEU."

The Environmental Enforcement Units have responsibility for investigating violations of Federal, State and City environmental laws and regulations throughout the East-of-Hudson and West-of-Hudson watersheds in eight upstate counties. The units play a vital role in coordinating investigative and enforcement actions with DEP's legal staff and watershed inspectors, the City's Corporation Counsel, and with the various law enforcement agencies operating in the watershed.

Before taking his new position, Mr. Barry had served on the New York City Police Department, most recently as Commanding Officer of the Manhattan North Narcotics Zone and of the 24th Precinct. He has extensive experience conducting and supervising investigations, as well as coordinating investigations with multiple enforcement agencies.

A graduate of New York University, Mr. Barry lives in Westchester County with his wife and four children.
