Dear New Yorker,

City Hall and the David Dinkins Manhattan Municipal Building were both lit blue to mark the 21st anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. Mayor Adams ordered all flags on city buildings, as well as stationary flagstaffs throughout the five boroughs, to continue to be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect for the memory of those who tragically lost their lives on September 11th. We will never forget and we remember those who showed the world the courage and resiliency of New York City.

Last week, CAU hosted a community conversation on public safety in NYPD Patrol Borough Queens South in Rochdale Village. Mayor Adams engaged in a Q&A to understand some of the local public safety issues that concern New Yorkers in Southeast Queens. We appreciate the opportunity to work together with community-based organizations, houses of worship, cure violence organizations, and the NYPD to improve public safety.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program 

Here’s what you need to know about the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) Waiver: it’s available to anyone who works in the government or nonprofit sectors. If you have worked for 10 years, you are eligible to have your federal loans fully forgiven. If you are a borrower with fewer than 10 years, there are still certain steps you must take right now.

The program is temporary and only lasts until October 31, 2022. Register here for a PSLF webinar on Wednesday, September 14th, 12 pmy.

Advocates honored in the past are a diverse group. Honorees have provided case management, mental health services, civil legal services, or job readiness training. Others lead healthy relationship workshops or educate communities and raise awareness through the performing arts, while others push for systemic change and equity in the field of gender-based violence. Do you know someone who has made a significant impact on behalf of survivors?

Ghost Gun Retailer Stopped from Selling Kits: Mayor Adams announced that another online ghost gun retailer, Salvo Technologies, has stopped illegally selling and delivering gun components – used to assemble illegal and untraceable firearms – to New York City residents. The agreement with Salvo Technologies – doing business as 80P Builder (based in Largo, Florida) – is the third agreement the city has reached with online ghost gun retailers since last month, following a lawsuit filed against five companies in June 2022.

New COVID-19 Vaccines Available: Mayor Adams announced distribution plans for the new bivalent COVID-19 boosters –Pfizer (12+) and Moderna (18+)– through NYC Health + Hospitals facilities, community-based health care providers, and pharmacies, in addition to being available through the at-home vaccination program for homebound and/or elderly New Yorkers. The updated boosters are more effective at protecting against the latest variants and are recommended for all New Yorkers ages 12-and up, whose last COVID-19 vaccination was more than two months ago. New Yorkers can check with their providers to see if they are offering updated boosters or search NYC Vaccine Finder online for locations offering booster shots.

Update on NYCHA Jacob Riis Houses: Mayor Adams released a statement after test results came in clearing the water for drinking at the Jacob Riis Houses in Manhattan. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene reviewed the final test results for contaminants and found the water to be well within EPA drinking water quality standards. We can confidently say the water at Riis Houses is and has been free of any discernible amount of arsenic since the initial tests were initiated in August and meets EPA standards. All test results related to claims of arsenic in the water at the Jacob Riis Houses can be found online.
