Site Safety Training Grants for Small Businesses

Reminder: The clock is ticking! There are 89 days before new Local Law 196 site safety training requirements go into effect on December 1, 2019. The NYC Department of Small Business Services is currently accepting applications for grants to cover the cost of site safety training for construction firms located in NYC with 1-15 employees.

DOB Stops All NYC Work by United Crane and Rigging

DOB halted all crane work citywide by United Crane and Rigging ("United"), the firm that DOB has identified as responsible for a crane accident on July 30th at a NYCHA building at 749 FDR Drive. The agency's order will remain in effect until the firm replaces the personnel who supervised the crane work at this and 21 other locations, and puts in place an independent monitor who will make monthly safety-compliance reports to DOB regarding United’s work.

Temporary Assistance for Accessory Signs

Local Law 28 of 2019 allows property owners who received permit violations for business storefront signs to request a waiver of penalties, and receive a 75% refund on sign permit filing fees.

Major Disciplinary Cases

  • $30,312 in total penalties issued to General Contactor A2Z Construction Group Inc., for seven site-safety violations on a construction site located at 2278 Bronx Park East, Bronx, including failing to have a superintendent or competent person on site, failing to provide required overhead protection, failing to have the construction plans on site, and three workers on site who did not have required OSHA training cards.

  • $25,000 in penalties issued to Tracking Number Holder Structural Preserv System, for failure to safeguard a construction site located at 259 West 30th Street, Manhattan, after materials that were improperly stored on the roof blew off and landed on a vehicle.

  • $38,125 in total penalties issued to General Contractor JRS Construction & Exp., for ten site-safety violations related to multiple failures to safeguard, including lack of required fencing and protection for electrical boxes, at five sites located at 437 Beach 28th Street, 435 Beach 28th Street, 431 Beach 28th Street, 429 Beach 28th Street, and 436 Beach 29th Street, all located in Queens.

  • $186,250 in total penalties issued to Fernandez Manuel, the owner of 93-20 50th Avenue, Queens, for occupancy of the building contrary to the Certificate of Occupancy, and work without a permit, for illegally converting a three-family home to an illegal six-family dwelling The owner was also cited for illegal occupancy of the garage.
