About the Projections

This set of New York City’s county-level population projections was initially created by the Department of City Planning in 2018/2019 for the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC) and were adopted by NYMTC’s Forecast Working Group members in October 2020. (Projections and methodology documents are available on NYMTC’s website).

In 2024, the projections went through a re-benchmarking process to account for the following: the 2020 Census (NYC population of 8.8 million), the official 2022 Census estimate (NYC population of 8.34 million), as well as updated housing completions, permits, and known housing projects in the pipeline. (The re-benchmarked projections are available on NYMTC’s website).

While there was a decrease in New York City’s population between 2020 and 2022, the housing stock continued to grow. The population rebounded after 2022, accompanied by further housing production. Given New York City’s recent population growth and housing production, and plans for more housing, we project continued population growth through 2055.
