Application Lifecycle

HCV Application Lifecycle

  • As of December 10, 2009, NYCHA is no longer accepting new Section 8 applications.
  • If you completed and submitted a preliminary application before this date, you may be asked to update your preliminary application or submit a completed application.
  • Failure to respond to a request to update a preliminary application or submit a completed application by the timeframes specified in NYCHA’s written request will result in your application being closed.

Wait List Selection

  • When Section 8 vouchers become available, NYCHA will select applicants off the waitlist in order of preference and date.

Final Eligibility

  • NYCHA will verify program eligibility based on:
    •  family composition,
    •  income and asset information, and
    • a criminal background check (CBC) and sex offender check of all family members 16 years of age or older.

Briefing/Voucher Issuance

  • NYCHA will provide a briefing packet and a voucher to the applicant, which allows the applicant to begin searching for a unit.

Leasing Up

  • Applicants will have 120 days from the voucher issuance date to find a unit and complete the rental process.
