Jewish Heritage Reception 2018

June 26, 2018

New York City represents the largest Jewish community of any city in the world, noted Mayor Bill de Blasio at the 2018 Jewish Heritage Reception at Gracie Mansion. “If you took the Jewish community from New York City, we would be so much less as a city,” Mayor de Blasio added.

First Lady Chirlane McCray also highlighted the Jewish value of tikkun olam, or “repairing the world,” and her recent visit to a synagogue as part of the third annual ThriveNYC Weekend of Faith, where she spoke about the free Mental Health First Aid offered in the city.

Ambassador Dani Dayan, Consul General of Israel in New York, also spoke, highlighting the commitment New York City has made in supporting Israel.

Mayor Bill de Blasio recognized Mordechi Rosenfeld, commonly known as MODI, an Israeli-American comedian as a, “wonderful New Yorker who honors his Jewish heritage and loves his city.” In addition to uniting and uplifting our City’s diverse residents through the power of laughter, the versatile artist has studied cantorial music at Yeshiva University’s Belz School of Jewish Music and serves as a cantor at the Community Synagogue in the East Village. He also gives back to his community by appearing on the annual Chabad Telethon that raises vital funds for the organization’s educational and social services programs. In recognition of these achievements, MODI received a proclamation proclaiming June 26th, 2018 as “Mordechi ‘Modi’ Rosenfeld Day.”

In response, said MODI, “There is no other city in the world [to be in], especially if you’re an actor and comedian… It is an honor to be a part of this city.”

Entertainment for the evening was provided by the Rafi Malkiel Quintet and the acapella group Six13.
