“I’m especially excited to honor one of my personal heroes, one of Brooklyn’s favorite author of Unbought and Unbossed, Shirley Chisholm. Now, you all know that Shirley Chisholm made a place for herself, made room for herself at the decision-making table. That’s what you gotta do. She was the first in Albany, then in Washington as the first ever African American woman elected to Congress,” said First Lady Chirlane McCray to guests in attendance at Building on Shirley Chisholm’s Legacy: The Future of Women’s Civic and Political Leadership.
The inspirational evening included remarks by First Lady Chirlane McCray, Dr. Una Clarke, and Barbara Bullard followed by a panel discussion on civic engagement in New York City. The panelists included Catherine Almonte, Liuba Grechen Shirley, and L. Joy Williams with Jacqueline Ebanks as the moderator.
