Immigrant Heritage Week 2019

Monday, April 15th – Sunday, April 21st

Immigrant New York: Weaving a Tapestry of Us

Established in 2004, The Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) organizes Immigrant Heritage Week (IHW). The week pays homage to the legacy of April 17, 1907, the day in NYC history that the largest number of immigrants – 11,000, entered the U.S. through Ellis Island. During this week long celebration, we highlight the histories, unique cultures, and contributions of New York City’s diverse immigrant communities. This year will mark the 15th annual IHW celebration which kicks off on Monday, April 15th, and runs through Sunday, April 21st.

IHW is a rich collection of free and low cost programs designed by MOIA and community partners that build cross-cultural understanding between New Yorkers, celebrates immigrant culture and the arts, and our collective work with NYC’s diverse immigrant population. Through panel discussions, educational forums and workshops, cultural programming and community conversations, we seek to empower all New Yorkers to take pride in what makes our city one of the most inclusive cities in the world.

Click on a day below or download the IHW brochure, to learn more about the events taking place throughout the city during Immigrant Heritage Week 2019!

Our first book is a novel, Another Brooklyn written by the American author Jacqueline Woodson. In this book, August is 35 the year she returns to Brooklyn to bury her father, and a chance encounter with a friend in her old neighborhood prompts a flood of memories from her youth. Having moved to Brooklyn at eight, August's coming of age was marked by a search for belonging, close friendships, freedom, and the little-understood absence of her mother. Her memories explore what it was like to be an African-American girl (and teen) in the 1970s, what possibilities existed -- and what challenges. This tale of friendship, love, and loss cuts back and forth through time.

Poetry Through Movement

6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Longwood Art Gallery at Hostos Community College
450 Grand Concourse, Room C-190, at 149th Street, Bronx, NY 10451

Developed and taught by Daya Arts co-founder Kiran Rajagopalan, Poetry Through Movement  is a workshop for all ages  focusing on a distinctive aspect of Indian classical dance called abhinaya, or poetry through movement. Abhinaya is the subtle use of hand gestures, facial expressions, and body language to bring to life text and subtext in a dance composition. It can be used to narrate a piece, describe through metaphor, and to depict characters. More than just pantomime or storytelling, abhinaya serves as a “cultural archive” in which Indian classical dancers try to spontaneously recall and interpret images, metaphors, similes, ideas, stories, characters, and archetypes culled from personal experience and South Asian history, mythology, and tradition. At the same time, abhinaya is a teachable technique of establishing intention, narrative, and/or characterization that can be useful for performers of any discipline or cultural background.

"Immigrants are US" is the latest chapter of "The Generation (G) Project", a participatory art campaign launched by New York-based immigrant artist Edward Hillel. It transforms the current hysteria around immigration and the negative view of migrants through a collaborative public art project encouraging us to recognize that we are ALL immigrants whether by choice or through forced migration, as is the case with the African-American diaspora. In this way we hope to build and expand a dialogue between Americans from all walks of life, in order to begin to recognize ourselves in each other and each other in ourselves.

Financial Empowerment within Immigrant Communities
Prana
10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
New Lab
19 Morris Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11205

On average, immigrants are less likely to qualify for loans or credit in the United States than native-born Americans. Despite such constraints on access to mainstream sources of capital, the growing number of minority-owned businesses suggests that other avenues to capital may also exist. A communal, decentralized approach to finance is something that immigrants from Asia, Africa, Caribbean, and Latin America brought with them given the fragile financial infrastructure in their countries. Through this event, we will be exploring various ways in which immigrant communities have financially prospered in the United States, building businesses, creating wealth, and adding to the tax revenue and GDP of the country. This discussion will happen with a panel of following experts in the field of immigration, small business loans, community activism, and immigrant art.

Exhibit: “For Freedom”
12:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Lithuanian Alliance of America
307 West 30th Street, New York, NY 10001

“For Freedom” explores the political, financial, military, and cultural aspects of the passionate support which energized Lithuanian Americans in the cause of independence and recognition for Lithuania. Using photographs, documents, publications, and other historical artifacts—drawn from the Museum as well as other regional and national collections—the exhibition demonstrates that Lithuanian Americans did not waver in their support of the native land, a support that lasted most of the twentieth century.  Most importantly, “For Freedom” uses historical documents (resolutions, memoranda, correspondence, and presidential statements) to show that this century-long struggle for freedom was powered by ideas and ideals expressed in words and actions.
