Immigrant Heritage Month 2022

Immigrant Heritage month graphic depicting essential workers holding the City

Originally started in 2014, Immigrant Heritage Month (IHM) is a month-long celebration that allows communities to explore their own heritage and celebrate the shared diversity of this great city. Throughout the month, we will highlight the endless contributions, rich histories, and unique cultures, of our City's diverse immigrant communities.

During this monthly celebration - Wednesday, June 1 - Thursday, June 30, 2022 - the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) is proud to honor and celebrate the invaluable contributions of immigrant New Yorkers, who have unwaveringly moved New York City forward with our theme Immigrant New York: Rebuilding Together.

This year, IHM includes in-person and virtual events organized by community partners. We invite you to join us in celebrating our immigrant communities, honoring New York City's legacy as a city of immigrants, and engaging your communities through the events below.

ADG7: Korean Shamanic Folk-Pop
7:30pm
Damrosch Park, Amsterdam Ave & W 62nd St, New York, NY 10023

Part of Festival of New York (June 11 – 21, 2022)
They're not your daughter's K-Pop band! The nine-piece South Korean ensemble ADG7 (Ak Dan Gwang Chil) draws equal inspiration from newly reclaimed Korean folk styles of gut and minyo and the contemporary Eurocentric stylings of modern K-Pop for music for a mix that will surprise you with its raucous, danceable energy. The band's charismatic and ultra-fashionably dressed trio of frontwomen are backed by masterfully played traditional Korean instrumentation and present a distinctively theatrical style of performance that's like nothing you've ever heard before, but that you'll never forget. Fresh off of their recent show-stopping Tiny Desk Concert, you won't want to miss the crowd-pleasing sonic sensations that The New York Times calls “catchy, bouncy and brash.” ADG7: Korean Shamanic Folk-Pop is presented as a part of Lincoln Center's Summer for the City. This program is supported by Korea Arts Management Service. This engagement of ADG7 is funded through the Mid Atlantic Tours program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. Home | This Is NY

Inti Raymi Sun Festival
12:00pm - 4:30pm
Queens Museum, Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, NY 11368

Part of Festival of New York (June 11 – 21, 2022)
Join us for a special celebration of Inti Raymi, or Sun Festival, with a ceremony by Abya Yala Arte y Cultura, art making for the whole family, and dance performances from the Andes.
The ceremony of the Inti Raymi was celebrated for hundreds of years in the Tahuantinsuyo, the Quechua nation that extended into territories that are part of present day Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and of southern Colombia, northern Argentina and Chile. On this day, the Winter Solstice in the southern hemisphere, South American indigenous cultures still gather to honor, thank and give tribute to the Sun God (Inti) and Mother Earth (Pachamama) to mark the beginning of a new year and as a reminder of our interdependent connection with our planet Earth and our environment.
Abya Yala Arte y Cultura, an artist collective dedicated to increasing awareness of Andean culture, celebrates the Inti Raymi with a deep sense of conviction and identification with its ancestral roots. More than a “representation” of the Inti Raymi, their work conveys how the Inti Raymi exists within us, its essence expressing humankind’s need for survival and a shared sense of universal responsibility for both mankind and nature. The Inti Raymi re-connects us to Mother Earth, stressing the importance of indigenous beliefs in the stewardship of the planet. What does it mean to be civically engaged in your local community? Learn how to use your voice and hear from members of Red de Pueblos Trasnacionales and their connection to the communities of the South Bronx.

Over 600,000 New Yorkers come from indigenous communities across Latin America to have made NYC their new home. These families enrich the cultural diversity and economic wealth of the city, but they navigate multiple challenges to live their lives. These challenges include language barriers, discrimination and poverty.

In this special session, indigenous immigrant leaders will share their experiences as indigenous immigrants and their ideas to build stronger and more inclusive communities, where we all learn from indigenous traditions and cultures, while ensuring access to rights for all.

Speakers include four members of the Colibrí indigenous Interpreters Collective, a NYC-based and indigenous immigrant led project that provides interpretation services in professional and informal settings in over 10 indigenous languages.

  • Fabian Muenala, from the Kichwa nation and current resident of NYC. He has been a Kichwa interpreter for the past 5 years, providing interpretations for the court system, hospitals and other professional settings.

Museum of Chinese in America

Double Happiness: An Original Immersive MOCA Production
6:30pm - 8:30pm
Museum of Chinese in America, 215 Centre Street, New York, NY 10013

Part of Festival of New York (June 11 – 21, 2022)
Written by Emily Locke, directed by Dennis Yueh-Yeh Li, and produced by MOCA, this original production Double Happiness will be an immersive theatre experience. Join Claire and Alex as they (attempt) to combine cultures and merge families at their wedding banquet. Will love conquer all? Which family is more traditional?
As the wedding begins, conflicts start to emerge. Double Happiness is a comedic immersive dinner and theatrical show that unpacks the complexity and explores the nuances within the Chinese American/Immigrant identity while allowing the audience to enjoy a (somewhat) traditional Chinese wedding.
As the ceremony gets underway, the wedding guests (the audience) see the dynamics of the bride and groom’s families unfold – and unravel. After a dramatic ceremony, the cast and the audience move to another event space inside the museum, where the banquet dinner begins and Double Happiness continues. Home | This Is NY

Admission Fee: $88 general ticket
