Safe Cleaning At Home: Body Fluids

Body fluids (such as vomit, blood, diarrhea and urine) may contain germs that can make you and others in your home sick. Always take precautions while cleaning up body fluids at home.

  • Avoid directly touching body fluids . Wear protective clothing, like rubber gloves.
  • Be careful not to get body fluids on your exposed body parts , including your skin, eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Pick up large spills using disposable absorbent materials (like towels or paper towels).
  • Discard items that cannot be cleaned into the trash.
  • Clean hard, non-porous surfaces with soapy water.
  • Disinfect surfaces after cleaning by wiping them down with a bleach solution (one cup household bleach for every two gallons of water).
  • Wash fabrics using detergent and water.
  • Carefully read and follow the label directions when using cleaning and disinfectant products to make sure they are used safely and effectively.
  • After cleaning:
    • Thoroughly wash hands and exposed skin with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
    • Clean and disinfect gloves and other equipment (e.g. reusable mops) with a bleach solution (one cup household bleach for every two gallons of water) and rinse with clear water when finished. Allow to thoroughly dry.
    • Discard cleaning items that cannot be cleaned.
