Alternative-to-detention (ATD) ATD programs are court-mandated services for youth with cases pending in the Family Court. Programs offer individualized supervision and support to ensure youth return to court and avoid further law enforcement contact.
ATD services are available in all boroughs. The goal of each ATD program is to promote positive behaviors, healthy relationships, and problem-solving skills that will allow youth to remain safely in the community during the pendency of their case. ATDs engage youth in educational and recreational services, connect them to prosocial activities, foster positive relationships with caring adults, and address family relationships and functioning. In addition, ATD services will connect youth and families to viable, sustainable community supports to reduce stressors within the family system that may contribute to negative youth behavior.
The court must mandate participation. It is anticipated that youth will be engaged for a 30 to 90-day period.
Youth must be between 12-18 years of age.
