Before you submit your application

    You must have the applicable Business Certificate based on your business’s legal structure. More info

      Although DCWP does not require submission of your Business Certificate in order to process your application, DCWP may request this document under section 20-104 of the New York City Administrative Code.

    Complete the Basic License Application. More info

       

      The Basic License Application requires business information, including applicable identification numbers (such as EIN, SSN, or ITIN); contact information for the business location and business owner, history of criminal and / or civil charges for the business owners, partners, shareholders, and officers; and any DCWP license history for individuals named on the application and their relatives.

    The business must provide their New York State Sales Tax Identification Number or Certificate of Authority Application Confirmation Number on the Basic License Application .

      Submit a rate schedule listing all rates to be charged for storage and handling of property. The rate schedule must be on your business' letterhead.

        Submit a copy of a $10,000 surety bond (or third party bond), properly signed. More info

            The copy of the bond must name the City of New York as the Certificate Holder. The business name and address on the bond must match the information provided in the license application. The applicant must also submit a copy of the bond receipt showing that the bond has been paid in full and does not expire before the end of the licensing period.

        Submit a copy of the Certificate of Occupancy, Temporary Certificate of Occupancy (expiring no less than 30 days after the submission of this application), or Letter of No Objection from the Department of Buildings (DOB) confirming that the business' premises is suitable for the business.           If submitting a Certificate of Occupancy or Temporary Certificate of Occupancy, it must be the most current version and show approval of the premises for "Use Group 16" or "Storage Warehouse."

        Submit samples of all contracts that will be used by the business. More info

          Each of these contracts must include the following statements:
          - The warehouse operator provides, without cost to the consumer, legal liability coverage for loss or damage to the consumer's property caused by negligence, at the minimum value of $ 0.30 per pound per item up to $2,000. AND
          - The consumer may purchase through the storage warehouse operator additional liability coverage to cover either specific items or all of the household goods at additional cost.

        Submit a copy of your business' Insurance Certificate that provides consumers with protection against loss or damage due to negligence. More info

          The Insurance Certificate must name the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection as the Certificate Holder. Legal liability coverage is to be provided at the minimum value of $0.30 per pound per item up to $2,000. Please note that the insurance policy must meet all requirements of the Storage Warehouse Law, Section 20-480 (B32-536) and regulations.

        If the license application will be filed by someone other than the applicant, complete the Granting Authority to Act Affirmation.

            • $590: License Fee of the first warehouse for applicants who file for a new Storage Warehouse License from April 2 of years that end in an odd number to September 30 of years that end in an odd number. Applicants will pay $300 for each additional warehouse.
            • $443: License Fee of the first warehouse for applicants who file for a new Storage Warehouse License from October 1 of years that end in an odd number to April 1 of years that end in an even number. Applicants will pay $225 for each additional warehouse.
            • $295: License Fee of the first warehouse for applicants who file for a new Storage Warehouse License from April 2 of years that end in an even number to September 30 of years that end in an even number. Applicants will pay $150 for each additional warehouse.
            • $148: License Fee of the first warehouse for applicants who file for a new Storage Warehouse License from October 1 of years that end in an even number to April 1 of years that end in an odd number. Applicants will pay $75 for each additional warehouse.
            • Non-Refundable Convenience Fee for paying with a credit card.

          Steps to apply online:

          Review the requirements for the license and gather all materials before clicking the Apply Online button. Note: You will be redirected to a new web page where you will need a registered account with the City of New York to submit an online application.

          • 2

            After submitting an application online, print a copy of the Confirmation Page. The Confirmation Page will list the additional steps and materials required to complete the application. These materials are also listed above and must be submitted within five business days of filing the application online if they were not uploaded as part of the online application submission.

              Complete the required application forms and gather all necessary documentation identified in the section above.
