Portable Fire Extinguisher Requirements

Portable fire extinguishers are an important part of an overall fire safety program. FDNY regulations require a certain number, type, and placement of portable fire extinguishers in your place of business, depending on the building, business type, and other factors. These requirements are detailed in Section 15-02 of Title 3 of the Rules of the City of New York.

You can purchase fire extinguishers from a retail store or from a company certified by the FDNY, as identified in the Company Approval Report, below. These certified companies are required to maintain and refill your extinguishers.
