Education, Department of State
Medical physicists must have a license to practice in New York State. The Medical Physics Professional License comes from the NYS Department of Education (NYSDOE).

Applicants must have a post-graduate degree in their area of specialty and several years of experience. Those without the experience can receive a permit to practice under the supervision of a licensed professional.

Four types of licenses are available:
  • Diagnostic radiological physics;
  • Medical health physics;
  • Medical nuclear physics; and
  • Therapeutic radiological physics (also called "radiation oncology").
