Information About Standpipes



Fire Department City
Standpipes provide water access points for fire hoses and other fire suppression devices inside a building. Depending on the type of occupancy of a building or the construction code under which it was built the Department of Buildings may require a building to install a standpipe system.

All buildings that currently have standpipes or will have a standpipe system installed must maintain their standpipe system. Standpipe systems must undergo routine testing and maintenance as mandated by the Fire Department. Testing and maintenance must be performed by a person holding an FDNY issued Certificate of Fitness for the type of standpipe system in use at the building.
