Information About Occupying, Repairing, Or Replacing Sidewalks, Roadways, or Curbs

Transportation, Department of City
New York City law requires property owners to, at their own cost, install, construct, reconstruct, repave and repair the sidewalk adjacent to their properties, including the intersection quadrant and pedestrian ramps for corner properties, in accordance with Department of Transportation specifications. Property owners are liable for penalties arising on account of failure to maintain sidewalks. Property owners are encouraged to perform repairs to their sidewalks before a condition becomes a defect which would give rise to a violation.

Any work that will make a sidewalk or roadway inaccessible to the public will require a permit for the Department of Transportation. Examples of such activity include construction work, filming, the placement of dumpsters, and so on.
